What We Do

About: Headliner

At Somar Interpreting we understand the challenges related to interpreting for children, therefore we aim to focus on social interaction and learning.  Our interpreters strive to maintain their position as the classroom interpreter, following the Code of Professional Conduct (CPC), while using the skills needed to be effective, helpful and flexible towards the needs of each student individually.

Somar Interpreting is more than just knowing how to interpret competently. Interpreters must process language quickly and accurately. They must think about spoken English and American Sign Language simultaneously. That's what we do at Somar Interpreting.

Educational interpreting for children and youths is different than interpreting for adults. Childhood and adolescence involve development in many important domains – cognitive, social and linguistic. We work with schools to foster many forms of development, not just learning classroom content. At the same time, we understand the importance of supporting the educational goals and outcomes as defined by the student’s needs.  By working with a student, all adults automatically become role models and language models.  We take this role very seriously.

Educational Interpreters have a meaningful job, with long term effects. At Somar Interpreting we understand that the interpreter is an important member of the educational team, with a responsibility to maximize learning and help implement the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). The word “Educational” in the title “Educational Interpreter” is an important distinction. It means working with a developing child, and this is reflected in our everyday practice. That is important to us.
